Tropes Are Tools

Aka some thoughts on where the obsession with “doing it right” comes from.

We live in advice culture. I am, rather obviously, part of it. It’s right in my blog url. However, this leads people to have this general belief that if you just find the right advice then you’ll be set. Advice comes from experience, after all, and if you go through the same experience then the advice has to apply.

Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

“The same experience” factors are pretty hard to nail down. It’s everything from personality types to how much free time you have to what your focus is. If an extravert tries to give an introvert socialization and networking advice, it’s probably not going to work as well for the introvert because even if these two people are exactly the same in every other way (impossible, but go with it), the fact that one…
